Break Out Those Lederhosen!
How do you usher in autumn? In Southern California where it’s still 82 degrees in late October, we stock up on fall-scented candles, bake pumpkin pie, and shake off the moth balls from our knitted sweaters and corduroys, which were in storage, to wear, along with our….lederhosen for Oktoberfest of course!
Just what is Oktoberfest? For those unfamiliar with the yearly celebration, it is an autumn festival that began in Germany, celebrating the marriage of Prince Ludwig and Princess Therese von Sachsen-Hildburghausen, in 1810. People enjoyed the festivities so much, the Germans decided to make it a yearly bash, which celebrates beer, bratwurst, and all things Bavarian, as well as revelry with friends. Eventually the festivities grew to 16 days annually and is now celebrated in many countries, including the US, where it vies for attention with Halloween.
In Anaheim, California, those of German ancestry established The Phoenix Club over 55 years ago as a place to honor their culture and customs, and welcome everyone who also have interest in this heritage. Thus, Oktoberfest is a much-anticipated celebration at this location, and this year, as always, it did not disappoint. Liqueur shots in autumn flavors, as well as Jagermeister, were available for purchase, and of course we had to partake (it is Oktoberfest, afterall)! The bratwurst, sauerkraut and German potato pancakes, with applesauce, were hauntingly köstlichen (German for delicious). The pretzels were humongous, and of course, there was no shortage of German beer and mix drinks.
Games and vendors were also on hand for the festival, while many attendees were clad in costume or traditional German attire, which added to the merrymaking. Additionally a band played festive music for all ages, as everyone was invited to dance their heart out. And of course, what’s an Oktoberfest celebration without a chicken dance?
October is a month filled with celebration, and every year we look forward to this Bavarian-style fair to get us in the mood for the rest of Autumn in Southern California, especially when summer missed the announcement that its close-up is over and it’s now Autumn’s turn to take center stage!
